T Rule-based games are social activities structured by specific rules that not only entertain players but also create an environment where participants can learn naturally, developing cognitive skills and strategies that can be applied to future situations; the objective of this study was to investigate the impact of rule-based games as a pedagogical strategy for meaningful learning about sustainable solid waste management among 6º08 students at Leónidas Acuña Educational Institution, located in the Department of Cesar, Municipality of Valledupar, Colombia. The research was based on the theories of Piaget (1962, 1969) and Ausubel (1983), emphasizing the importance of play in children's cognitive development and meaningful learning. Additionally, the study addressed sustainable solid waste management according to the environmental regulations and policies implemented in Colombia, highlighting its connection to environmental education. The study was conducted using a quantitative approach with a non-experimental design and a descriptive scope. The sample included 28 students selected through intentional non-probability sampling. A Likert-scale questionnaire was used to collect data from the respondents. The results showed that most students struggle to properly classify Solid Waste (SW) as organic or inorganic, have difficulty identifying recyclable materials, fail to recognize the three color-coded waste separation system for optimizing solid waste management, and lack awareness of techniques to reduce, reuse, and recycle in daily life. On the other hand, 100% of the students expressed a preference for classes that include games, highlighting their positive influence on meaningful learning. It was concluded that there is a need to integrate playful strategies into the educational system to enhance meaningful learning about solid waste management.
