Abstract The objective of this research was to analyze and understand the hip hop movement, in its various forms (MC, DJ, breakdancing, and graffiti), as a cultural expression of young people in the city of Valledupar, as well as its implications for identity formation, the dynamics of resistance, and its impact on social transformation. In a cultural context marked by a consolidated hegemonic culture, this movement emerges as a youth practice that struggles for meanings, spaces, and diverse forms of symbolic representation in the city. Drawing on a qualitative and ethnographic approach, semi-structured interviews and participant observation were conducted with active members of the local movement. The results show that hip hop transcends its musical dimension to establish itself as a space of belonging, critical thinking, and the reframing of youth experiences, while also confronting processes of social stigmatization. It is concluded that this cultural practice contributes to the sociocultural development of the local context and constitutes a relevant field for future research on youth and social transformations.
